What You Should Know About Marble Countertops

When we moved into our 1925 Tudor Home, I knew that I wanted to make the investment in marble throughout our home. We selected marble for our countertops, floors, and backsplash areas and we are so happy with the timeless look this natural stone adds to our home.

What You Should Know About Marble Countertops

Etching

We sealed our countertops (this is a process we have a company complete for us every 3 years), and yet we still have a lot of etching in the areas of the countertop surfaces we use the most. Things with a lot of acid, such as lemon, citrus fruit in general, onion, tomatoes, etc will leave an etch mark on the countertop when the food touches the marble surface. That being said, our countertops are honed, which minimizes the look of etching. We have also chosen to embrace the etching as part of the story of our home at this time.

Staining

We have had no issues with staining. In my opinion, staining would be more visible than etching, so I am thankful we sealed our countertops to protect them from any stains.

Scratches and Dings

Marble is a soft, natural material and it scratches very easily. The scratches show up as little white marks on the surface of the marble countertop. Much like the etching, we have chosen to embrace the imperfections of this natural material and let the scratches tell the story of our kitchen and home.

There is a resurfacing process for marble countertops that will remove etching and some scratches, and we may choose to do this at a later time. Right now, the etches and scratches don’t bother us.

Is it Heat Resistant?

Marble is heat resistant up to a certain point, but we still use hot pads to protect the countertops. It’s an easy habit to maintain.

How To Disinfect Marble Countertops?

We use soap and water for every day cleaning and we have a special spray from the company that sealed the countertops that we use at night. We don’t use any spray or “natural stone” cleaner that you can purchase at the store.

Marble Countertops in Bathrooms?

The countertops in our bathroom have held up wonderfully! We have marble in our daughter’s bathrooms, our bathroom and our laundry room and we have minimal scratches or etching in these areas.

Overall, we love our marble countertops!
