When Brian and I lived in Denver, the constantly dry air played a toll on our skin. Â Honestly, I thought that the humidity of the midwest would help cure my sore hands, but unfortunately, I was wrong!
My hands are SO dry, I can barely wear my wedding ring right now because every little thing is causing irritation.
I knew I needed a solution and FAST. Â A couple of years ago, I made a Homemade Whipped Body Butter as a gift for my family and friends. Â In the midst of trying many different store-bought lotions, I remember that this homemade stuff totally did the trick when I made and used it before.
It’s so simple to make, looks like frosting, and will make your skin super soft. Â Just what Brian and I needed for our poor dry hands.
This body butter is a combination of shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and lavender essential oils. This homemade lavender body butter is life-changing!
Shea butter comes from the seeds of the fruit of the shea or karite tree and it is high in vitamins A and E. Â No wonder this stuff will make your skin feel amazing! Not to mention smell amazing, too!
Jojoba oil is often used as a carrier oil for essential oils, and I’ve seen it in several products that my sister sells at her salon.
As I mentioned above, the process is really simple.
Just melt the coconut oil and shea butter together, then mix in the jojoba oil and essential oils. Â Then, place it in the fridge to harden (either in a mixer bowl or a bowl you can use hand beaters in) for 1-2 hours.
Remove from the fridge and whip for about 10 minutes, or until the body butter looks like frosting! (It will look SO much like frosting, but don’t eat it 😉 )
Soothe your winter skin with this simple Homemade Whipped Lavender Body Butter. It looks like frosting, smells wonderfully relaxing and will make your skin so soft!
Ingredients
Scale
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 cup shea butter
1/2 cup jojoba oil
10–30 drops lavender essential oil (or essential oil of your choice)
Instructions
Melt the coconut oil and shea butter over low heat. This will take about 10-12 minutes.
Mix in the jojoba oil and essential oils.
Pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer or a bowl that you can use a hand mixer in. Set in the fridge to harden for 1-2 hours.
When solid, whip for about 10 minutes or until it looks like frosting.
Store in a sealed container and use where you would use lotion.

I was looking at your ingredients for this recipe. I notice you do not use any preservatives or arrowroot powder to make not to greasy or vitamin E. What would be the shelf life of your recipe after making it?
Hello! I’m really interested in trying this recipe but I hope this questions doesn’t sound stupid but could I sub the jojoba oil for breast milk? I’ve been searching for lotion recipe with shea butter and breast milk for making my daughter a lotion for her eczema.
Thank you, Tara, for sharing this incredible recipe for homemade whipped lavender body butter. It’s such a luxurious and nourishing treat for the skin. Highly recommended article.
I’ve never made my own products like this, but I’m excited to try. Wondering if you could put some purple food coloring in this, since it’s lavender? I don’t want to dye anyone’s skin, LOL.
Hi,
I’m just learning to do DIY recipes to get away from the chemicals in store bought products. How lond does this butter last? Do you know of a natural preservative to make the lotion last longer? thx
Hello! I’m a RDN as well 🙂 I have been making and selling scented soy candles this past year and would love to add this to my line of products! If I used fragrance oils (skin safe of course) would the jojoba oil be necessary? You said it’s a carrier for essential oils … fragrance oils are formulated for candles and body products. Just curious!
You can actually use olive oil instead and the essential oils are perfectly fine with that! I’m not an oil expert either but I do own a small business and I know some about oils.
Hi! Good question! I am not an essential oil expert, but I would think that if the oils you are using are skin safe, you could try it without the jojoba. Just know that I haven’t tested it this way, so I’m not sure how it will actually turn out 🙂 Let me know how it goes!
I’ve made this and have added a spoonful or two of arrowroot powder to help combat any greasiness. I myself didn’t feel it was greasy, but my husband really thought it was. He too was happy once I added the Arrowroot powder.

Hi! I want to add arrowroot powder to mine as well and have a question. When do you add it in ????
Glad to hear that!! Thanks for sharing your modification!
Could you substitute the jojoba oil for something like olive oil or canola oil?
I tried olive oil and it worked perfectly! And you’re right it’s not greasy at all!
Thanks for sharing!
You could give it a try! I haven’t tested it that way so cannot guarantee results, but would love to know the outcome if you do try it.
This sounds amazing. I’m going to try it with a premade body butter though and see if it works the same.
Let me know how it works!
Can you substitute almond oil for the jojoba oil in your lotion reciepe?
You could absolutely try it! I haven’t done this, so I can’t guarantee results, but let me know how it turns out!
Love the sound of this! Does the coconut oil make this a bit greasy? Or does whipping it stop this from happening?
It’s surprisingly not too greasy!! I hope you make this and love it!
