Not too long ago, Kara Lydon (The Foodie Dietitian), reached out to me asking to submit a smoothie recipe into a contest using sponsored by the Wild Blueberry Association of North America.
First of all, I was super flattered that Kara asked me to participate. Secondly, I couldn’t imagine saying no to this awesome opportunity! I love smoothies, I love blueberries, and I wanted to learn more about the difference between wild blueberries and regular cultivated blueberries. It was an easy yes for me!
OK, so now you are probably wondering…what’s the difference between wild blueberries and regular cultivated blueberries?
Wild Blueberries are:
More vibrant blueberry flavor.
Have 2x times the antioxidants of regular blueberries.
They are frozen at harvest, which kind of acts like nature’s pause button.
The next thing you are probably wondering is where can I find wild blueberries?
Typically, you can find them in the freezer aisle. Just make sure the package says “Wild.” The blueberries will be much smaller, so that’s another way to tell the difference.
So, what else makes this smoothie delicious?
Cacao | the raw form of dark chocolate full of heart-healthy antioxidants and magnesium.
Cinnamon | sweet and spicy without any added sugar.
Hemp Hearts | sometimes called hemp seeds, they do not contain THC. High in fiber, plant-based protein, potassium, Vitamin A, iron, and healthy fats.
I think you can interchange the two in a recipe, the difference is in the processing (from what I’ve read). Cacao is technically raw because it is made by cold pressing raw cocoa beans. It keeps living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat, cacao butter. Cocoa powder is raw cacao that has been roasted at high temperatures. This may affect the nutritional benefit of the cocoa. Make sense?!
This looks delicious! I <3 wild blueberries, I hoarded a bunch from TJ's when I found out about the contest! Good luck, this looks like a winner to me 🙂

OK, dumb question, but is cacao the same as cocoa powder? This looks so fun to eat!
